5 grounding techniques to calm anxiety in the moment

Anxiety pulls us into the future — into what-ifs and worst cases. Grounding does the opposite: it gently anchors you back to the present, where you’re usually safer than your mind is telling you. Here are five techniques you can use anywhere.
1. The 5-4-3-2-1 senses check
Name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. Moving through your senses interrupts the spiral and brings you back to now.
2. Box breathing
Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, out for four, hold for four. Repeat a few rounds. Slowing your breath signals safety to your nervous system.
3. Feel your feet
Press your feet into the floor. Notice the contact, the weight, the support beneath you. Physical sensation is a quick route out of your head.
4. Name it to tame it
Quietly say, “This is anxiety. It’s uncomfortable, and it will pass.” Naming an emotion reduces its intensity.
5. Cold water
Splash cool water on your face or hold something cold. This can calm a racing heart within moments.
These tools help in the moment — but if anxiety is affecting your daily life, counselling can help you understand and ease it at the root. You don’t have to manage it alone.
